READING TUTORING
At Step by Step, reading tutoring is offered. A variety of strategies are used to help the student who is struggling with decoding skills and comprehension skills.
The Orton Gillingham multisensory approach is used to help struggling phonetic readers become more capable and competent. The Reading Readiness program created by Fundamental Learning Center in Wichita, Ks and the Phonics Intervention, a Saxon Phonics program are both used to help children become successful confident readers in the classroom. Emphasis is placed on skills such as phonological awareness, oral language, letter identification, decoding, handwriting, and spelling development, as well as establishing the alphabet principle.
A Lindamood Bell approach is used to help struggling readers become more capable and competent with recalling details and retelling the story. Visualize and Verbalize for Language Comprehension and Thinking teaches children to ‘create movies in their heads’ about what they have read. Language comprehension, critical thinking skills and expressive language skills are strengthened as children learn to create a visual gestalt from the words they read.
